Bold Colours in the Interior

How to use them without fear

From the team at COZY. Design·Interior ideas

Terracotta, forest green, saturated yellow, deep blue. Bold colour is the fastest way for a home to gain character. The fear of it is usually a fear of getting it wrong, not of the colour itself. With a few principles, the result is bold and balanced at once.

Choose one lead colour and let it drive. The rest of the palette supports it: neutrals, wood, textiles in close tones. That way the accent sounds confident without competing with everything around it.

Balance, not symmetry

Bold colour wants air around it. A large block of colour benefits from calm neighbours; a small saturated accent can enliven an otherwise restrained space. Light (natural and artificial) changes every tone, so we test it on site.

Colour isn’t a risk when there’s logic behind it.

Material is colour too

Brass, stone, velvet, matte wood: textures carry tone and depth. The combination of colour and material makes an interior feel alive, not just busy.

  • One dominant colour plus a supporting palette.
  • Test tones in daylight and in evening light.
  • Repeat the accent colour in at least two places for balance.
