Interior Designer Sofia: 10 Questions Before You Hire

10 questions to ask before you sign a contract

From the team at COZY. Design·Interior ideas

Beautiful renders don't tell you if an interior designer is good. The real difference shows on site, in how they work with contractors, installations and the decisions made during renovation. Here's how to choose an interior designer in Sofia you can trust.

“Looking for a good interior designer in Sofia” is what people type into Google and post in Facebook groups every day. The choice is huge: dozens of studios, all with beautiful photos, 3D renders and promises. But the difference between a good choice and a random one doesn’t show in the photos. It shows once the renovation starts, on site, among the contractors, cables and decisions that have to be made in minutes. Here’s how to choose an interior designer in Sofia you can trust.

1. Check finished projects, not just renders

3D renders are the easy part. Anyone can show you a beautiful rendering. A good interior designer will also show you photos of finished projects and tell you clearly which is a render and which is a real photo. Ask: “Which of these projects are actually built?” and “Can I see before-and-after photos?” Before-and-after shots are the most honest way to see what was really done, including wall removal, moving a kitchen, new installations or turning an attic storage space into a living room.

2. Ask about the work on site

Renovation is where projects succeed or fail. Ask directly: does the designer visit the site, how often, who talks to the contractors, and who decides when something on site doesn’t match the drawings. A good designer has experience working with a structural engineer, electrical and plumbing points, underfloor heating and the height of a suspended ceiling. If the answer is “we hand over the project, then it’s up to you,” know exactly what you’re paying for.

3. See exactly what you get

“Interior design” means different things to different studios. Ask for a clear list: the floor plan, 3D renders for every room, full technical drawings for the contractors covering electrical and plumbing points, lighting, finishes and custom furniture, a specification of materials and furniture, and a full budget. Ask how many versions of the plan and renders are included in the project.

4. Clarify where turnkey execution happens

Turnkey execution, where the studio selects and coordinates the contractors and oversees the renovation until handover, happens on site. At COZY. Design Studio this is available only in Sofia, while design and consultations cover all of Bulgaria. If you’re outside Sofia, ask exactly what you get: a complete project with drawings that you hand over to a local contractor, or something else.

5. Listen to how the designer thinks about function

A good interior starts with the floor plan, not the decor. At your first meeting, notice whether the designer asks about your lifestyle: who cooks, how much clothing the family has, whether you work from home, whether you have a pet. If the conversation is only about colors and style, function gets left behind.

6. Ask about communication and changes

Many disputes between a client and a studio start not from bad design but from unclear communication. Who is your point of contact throughout the project? How often do you get updates and through which channel? What happens if you want a change midway through the work, does it cost extra time, and who tells you? How is every decision documented so there’s no misunderstanding later?

7. Read the reviews, and what they actually say

Star ratings aren’t enough. Read what clients actually write: did the designer help them make decisions, were deadlines kept, how did the renovation go. Google reviews that describe a specific experience say more than any portfolio.

8. Understand what determines the price

The price of an interior project depends on the scope, not just the square meters, whether it’s a consultation and concept, a complete project with drawings, or turnkey execution. The complexity of the property also matters, including layout changes, wall removal and new installations, as well as how many rooms get a detailed design. A good designer will give you an individual offer with clearly described stages, after seeing the property.

9. Start on time

The most costly renovation mistakes happen in the first few weeks. If you have a new apartment with a completion certificate, the best time to contact a designer is before the finishing works start. That’s when walls, outlets, plumbing points and lighting can still be moved without demolition or double costs.

10. Trust your gut, once you have the answers

You’ll live with this interior for years, and you’ll work with the designer for months. It matters that they understand you and tell you the truth, even when it’s not what you want to hear. But make that choice only once you have clear answers to the questions above.

A good project isn’t the one that looks good in a photo. It’s the one where you know what’s happening at every stage, and why.

Geya Antonova, founder and lead interior designer at COZY. Design Studio, built the studio’s work around this transparency, with a clear scope, clear communication and presence on site from the floor plan to the handover of the finished home.

  • Ask for photos of finished projects, including before-and-after, not just renders.
  • Ask who visits the site and who talks to the contractors.
  • Ask for a list of what’s included in the project: drawings, renders, specification, budget.
  • Clarify where turnkey execution is available.
  • Ask who your point of contact is and how changes are handled.
  • Read what clients write in reviews, not just the star rating.
  • Contact a designer before the finishing works start.
