When you don't know who will live in the apartment you're designing, the brief becomes truly interesting. That's the case with the standard "On the Diagonal" apartments for the developer Bilda Invest. The apartments are genuinely large and spacious, even with a single bedroom.

Diagonal, texture and cosiness without clutter

We created plenty of storage, and to fill the long, endless walls with warmth and cosiness we laid them out on the diagonal with different textures and colours. This way (without taking away from the volume of the rooms and without cluttering them with furniture, when we don’t know the needs of the future occupants) we created cosiness.

Bold choices that are easy to change

Here we allowed ourselves to be truly bold, given that a single bedroom means these apartments aren’t meant for a family. We did it outside the cabinetry, so that surfaces can easily be repainted and the wallpaper swapped when needed.

How do you design a one-bedroom apartment to feel spacious and cosy?+

Can bold design still be practical for renting and selling?+

Yes, if the bold accents sit outside the permanent furniture: for "On the Diagonal" we did them so they're easy to repaint, with wallpaper that can be swapped when needed.

Who are spacious one-bedroom apartments right for?+

Couples or people living on their own. That's why we allowed ourselves bolder choices than in family apartments.
