"I want it to read as clean, but not sterile. Warm, so our little patients feel calm at the dentist, yet still crisp enough, because the other half of our patients are older adults. Around 20 specialised machines need to be powered." With this brief Dr. Nadezhda Kuyumdzhieva came to us, after two studios had refused to take on the "technological nightmare" tied to the interior of a dental centre.

For us, though, this sounds like a dream brief, because the more technologically challenging a project is, the more interesting we find it.

Technology hidden within the design

Built into the treatment rooms’ beautiful cabinetry are the power supplies for: suction units, autoclaves, plaster trimmers, model cutters and sterilisers. The procedures for surface safety and for the movement of biological waste in the medical centre are observed.

The ceiling: the first thing the patient sees

After the technology, the first thing we tackled was the ceilings, because they are the most noticeable element of a dental centre’s interior. While in the chair, the patient spends the whole time looking only at it, and at the surroundings of the rooms.

To contribute to the overall positive experience of patients, we focused on the design of the treatment rooms, to read as clean while staying warm and reassuring. So we started the concept with a slightly “playful” ceiling and used warm wood to bring in comfort.
