For many people interior design comes down to a beautiful visualisation. That is why the choice between an interior designer and an interior design studio looks like a matter of taste and price. In practice the difference is in what exactly is included in the work and who is responsible for it.
Visualisation is a small part of the work
Visualisation is at most 20% of an interior designer’s work. The rest is a technical, multidisciplinary profession: technical drawings, furniture construction, budgeting, ergonomics and the psychology of space. So the first question to anyone, whether an independent designer or a studio, is what you get besides pictures.
When it matters that it is a studio
A studio is an organisation with a process, not just a person with taste: clear stages, drawings to one standard, a budget and control during execution. The same is possible with an independent designer, but it depends entirely on that one person. So ask not about the label but about the process and what you receive at the end.
Five questions that show the difference
- What is included: visualisations only, or also technical drawings, furniture construction and a budget.
- Who designs the custom furniture and to whose drawings it will be made.
- Whether there is a budget with materials and suppliers you can actually buy from, not just attractive examples.
- Who supervises execution and who you turn to when a measurement in the design does not match the site.
- What has been completed: look at built projects, not only visualisations.

In apartment VP 12, for example, all the built-in furniture was made to the studio’s drawings, with heights matched to the clients.
